Our Heritage

A Rich Heritage

St. Simons United Methodist Church was the first United Methodist Church erected on St. Simons Island after John and Charles Wesley, the founders of Methodism, preached here well over two centuries ago. Founded in 1938, the church has grown to become a strong witness for Christ on the island, in Glynn County and throughout our nation and world.

Prior to 1938, there were only two established churches on St. Simons Island – Christ Church Episcopal and St. William Catholic Church. In 1934, the Community Church League had constructed a building dedicated for the use of all other denominations to worship together. However, as the residential and visitor population grew, there became a need to erect more churches. In 1938, people from each of three denominations represented on the Island – the Baptists, the Methodists and the Presbyterians – met to organize their own churches, and on November 19, 1938, St. Simons United Methodist Church was founded. On December 14, 1941, the St. Simons United Methodist Church sanctuary was dedicated.

As the church membership grew, additional facilities were needed for Sunday school classrooms, a parsonage, and fellowship areas. Adjacent land was acquired and members assisted with construction and payment for the new facilities. By the late 70’s, plans began to take shape for a new sanctuary. This building was completed in 1981, with the first service being held on April 12. The earlier sanctuary became known as “the Chapel”. To date, 5 buildings make up St Simons United Methodist Church.

Over time, our church services and activities have evolved as well. In the late 1990’s, a group of young adults gathered together for study and praise. This became the foundation for the Contemporary Worship service. Now, members and visitors have the opportunity to attend traditional or contemporary worship.

St Simons United Methodist Church also offers Sunday school, Bible studies, fellowship activities, men’s and women’s groups, thriving youth and children’s programs, as well as a quality music ministry. In addition, the newly enlarged St. Simons UMC Preschool offers full-time Christian childcare.

We have come a long way since 1938, and will continue to celebrate the growth of St. Simons United Methodist Church. Current membership is over 1,000, with new members joining every week. Please call the office at 912-638-3317 if you would like to join.

Our Beliefs

What We Believe About God

We believe in the one true, holy and living God, Eternal Spirit, who is Creator, Sovereign and Preserver of all things visible and invisible. He is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness and love, and rules with gracious regard for the well-being and salvation of men, to the glory of his name. We believe the one God reveals himself as the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, distinct but inseparable, eternally one in essence and power.

What We Believe About Jesus Christ

We believe in Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, in whom the divine and human natures are perfectly and inseparably united. He is the eternal Word made flesh, the only begotten Son of the Father, born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. As ministering Servant he lived, suffered and died on the cross. He was buried, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven to be with the Father, from whence he shall return. He is eternal Savior and Mediator, who intercedes for us, and by him all men will be judged.

What We Believe About The Holy Spirit

We believe in the Holy Spirit who proceeds from and is one in being with the Father and the Son. He convinces the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. He leads men through faithful response to the gospel into the fellowship of the Church. He comforts, sustains and empowers the faithful and guides them into all truth.
